Elon Musk has once again made headlines in the tech world with the launch of a new artificial intelligence project on Twitter. The project involves recruiting top AI talent from DeepMind to work on large language models (LLM) for his company, Based AI. In fact, Musk has reportedly purchased a staggering 10,000 GPUs for this very purpose, with the flagship machine learning A100 GPU priced at over $15,000 each.
Based AI is set to be the first external customer of Dojo, a machine learning training cluster derived from Tesla Autopilot. While the project is still in its infancy, the acquisition of such significant computing power could pave the way for a host of potential applications, including improving search functionality or generating targeted advertising content.
The project centers around creating a generative artificial intelligence that Twitter will train on its own vast amounts of data. The technology has the potential to enhance Twitter’s search capabilities or help rebuild its advertising business. This move comes shortly after Musk spearheaded an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on AI development, highlighting the need for responsible and ethical AI practices.
