Starlink enabled drones have taken to the skies over North Carolina, serving as lifelines for communities isolated by flood waters. These aerial couriers are airlifting essential supplies, including Starlink kits, to areas unreachable by ground vehicles. While Starlink steps up, traditional internet service providers face criticism for their handling of the situation. One Spectrum customer reported being denied account credit for services not received, with no estimated repair date provided. The company’s suggestion that she travel to a Wi-Fi access point or put her account on seasonal hold has left many questioning the priorities of established ISPs during emergencies.

In a move that’s winning hearts and potentially new customers, Starlink has donated over 1,000 kits to the affected region. The company is offering 30 days of free service to aid in response and recovery efforts. SpaceX engineers, including 10-year veteran Mike Coryell, have been deployed to expedite the installation process.

Coryell reports that over 1,000 Starlink kits have already been set up in the valley, with each deployment enabling ten times more people to communicate. The demand is staggering, with over 8,500 requests received from the region alone. “We’re going to be here as long as we can to get these deployed as fast as humanly possible,” Coryell states.

SpaceX’s Starlink Direct to Cell service is proving to be a crucial asset in the disaster response. This technology allows mobile phones to connect directly to Starlink satellites, enabling communication with emergency services and loved ones from virtually anywhere.

The Federal Communications Commission has granted SpaceX and T-Mobile emergency special temporary authority to activate Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability in the hurricane-affected areas. These satellites are already broadcasting emergency alerts to cell phones across all networks in North Carolina. Additionally, basic texting capabilities are being tested for most cell phones on the T-Mobile network in the state.

As North Carolina grapples with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Starlink’s swift and comprehensive response is setting a new standard for disaster relief. By leveraging its satellite network and innovative technologies, Starlink is not just providing internet connectivity – it’s offering a lifeline to those in need.
