SpaceX Unveils Major Starship Upgrades for Test Flight 7: Next-Gen Features Revealed

SpaceX Starship

SpaceX’s relentless pursuit of space innovation continues as the company announces substantial upgrades to its Starship vehicle, scheduled for Test Flight 7 next week. Modifications span across multiple systems, from propulsion to avionics.

Starship Flight 7 introduces strategic modifications to its forward flaps, relocating them toward the vehicle’s tip and reducing their size. Adjustment minimizes exposure to reentry heating while streamlining the underlying mechanisms, representing a crucial step in spacecraft optimization.

SpaceX engineers have implemented substantial improvements to Starship’s propulsion system. A 25% increase in propellant volume, coupled with vacuum-jacketed feedlines and an enhanced propulsion avionics module, promises improved performance and reliability. The integration of flight-proven hardware, including a Raptor engine from Test Flight 5, demonstrates SpaceX’s commitment to reusability.

The spacecraft’s thermal protection system received notable attention, featuring next-generation tiles and a backup layer to maintain integrity during reentry. SpaceX plans to conduct controlled experiments by removing specific tiles and testing metallic alternatives, including an actively cooled variant.

A comprehensive avionics redesign brings enhanced capabilities for complex missions. The system now boasts a more powerful flight computer, integrated communication antennas, and sophisticated navigation sensors. Addition of smart batteries managing 2.7MW of power across 21 high-voltage actuators showcases the vehicle’s increased complexity.

During its upcoming flight, Starship will deploy 10 Starlink simulators, mirroring the mass and dimensions of V3 starlink satellites.
