Tesla is setting up shop in Texas with a massive new Megapack factory that could dramatically scale its energy storage business. Plans to repurpose an existing 1.6 million square foot facility in Waller County, allowing for a significantly faster production timeline than building from scratch.

Tesla will invest approximately $194 million in facility upgrades and manufacturing equipment, with $44 million earmarked for building improvements and $150 million for Tesla’s specialized Megapack production equipment.

The Waller County project represents a substantial economic opportunity, with Tesla projecting annual revenue between $8-10 billion once the facility reaches full capacity. Local officials have embraced the development, with the Waller County Commissioners Court approving a tax abatement package to support Tesla’s investment.

“I want to thank Tesla for investing in Waller County and Brookshire. This will be a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for their Megapack product. It is a powerful battery unit that provides energy storage and support to help stabilize the grid and prevent outages,” said Vince Yokom, executive director of the Waller County Economic Development Partnership.

The Megapack factory represents just the initial phase of Tesla’s Texas energy storage ambitions. Future plans include a $31 million distribution facility with an additional $2 million investment in distribution equipment and building enhancements.

By utilizing existing structures rather than building new facilities, Tesla can potentially bring production online much faster than its typical factory construction timeline. Strategic approach allows the company to respond more quickly to growing demand for grid-scale energy storage solutions.

Tesla’s Megapack units serve a critical role in modern electrical infrastructure, providing massive energy storage capabilities that help utilities manage peak demand and prevent outages. The Texas facility will produce these industrial-scale battery systems designed specifically for utility applications.

With Texas experiencing notable grid reliability challenges in recent years, Tesla’s investment in local Megapack production could prove particularly valuable for the state’s energy infrastructure. As renewable energy adoption increases, the need for grid-scale storage solutions like the Megapack continues to grow.
