Tesla Engineers Confirm Model Y Steering Ratio Change, Creating “More Relaxed” Driving Experience

New Model Y

Tesla has made a noteworthy change to the steering characteristics of its new Model Y, according to both owner feedback and confirmation from a company executive. The adjustment, which appears to create a more relaxed driving experience, represents Tesla’s ongoing refinement of its popular electric crossover.

A new Model Y owner shared their observations on X, noting that “One of the first things I noticed while driving the New Model Y is the steering. The steering ratio feels more relaxed.” According to the owner’s manual, the number of turns lock-to-lock has increased from 2.0 to 2.4, suggesting a less aggressive steering ratio while maintaining nearly the same turning circle as previous versions.

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, confirmed these observations in a direct response to the customer. “You nailed it. Responsive steering does not have to come from ratio alone,” Lars stated.

He explained that the engineering team specifically worked to “calm the dartiness and improve response by making it more linear and predictable” while preserving the Model Y’s tight turning radius.

The change appears to address feedback from the Model Y’s expanding customer base, who may prefer a more composed driving experience over the sometimes twitchy feel that characterized earlier Tesla models. “I think this was a good change for the majority of Model Y buyers. It feels more relaxed to drive overall,” the owner noted.

This steering adjustment demonstrates Tesla’s willingness to iterate on its products based on real-world feedback. While performance enthusiasts sometimes favor quicker steering ratios, new Model Y steering setup seems to strike a better balance for daily driving scenarios.
