SpaceX’s Starlink manufacturing facility in Texas is poised to become the largest producer of printed circuit boards in the United States. This development, announced by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell speaking to the Texas House of Representatives, challenges the long-standing dominance of Southeast Asian manufacturers in this crucial tech sector.
The Bastrop, Texas facility, spanning nearly 1 million square feet, is not just big in size but in output as well. Having already produced its millionth Starlink dish earlier this month, the facility is gearing up for even greater production volumes. Shotwell’s confident assertion that they’ll “be able to beat Southeast Asia in efficiency” marks a significant shift in the global manufacturing landscape.
SpaceX’s decision to keep Starlink production in-house goes against the grain of many US tech companies that outsource their electronics manufacturing to Asia. This move not only boosts domestic manufacturing but also gives SpaceX greater control over its supply chain and quality assurance processes.
The ramping up of production isn’t without reason. Starlink’s user base has exploded, with over 4 million global users and counting. In Texas alone, the service boasts over 100k customers, with potential for significant growth given the estimated 800k yet-to-be-connected households in the state.
SpaceX’s ambitious plans don’t stop at terrestrial production. The company aims to launch approximately 100 missions to expand the Starlink satellite network, further enhancing connectivity for rural communities globally. This expansion underscores the symbiotic relationship between SpaceX’s manufacturing capabilities and its space operations.
The growth of the Bastrop facility could have far-reaching economic impacts.
