Tesla May 2025 Sales Plunge as Global EV Market Booms | Latest Data Analysis

Tesla

Tesla’s May sales data reveals persistent challenges across key markets, with Tesla’s registrations declining sharply even as electric vehicle adoption surges globally.

Monthly registration data from multiple countries paints a troubling picture for Tesla’s market position. While the company doesn’t release monthly sales figures directly, national registration databases provide insight into Tesla’s performance relative to the broader EV sector.

Germany’s KBA data indicates Tesla sales dropped 36% year-over-year in May, a significant decline that contrasts sharply with the country’s overall EV market growth of 45%. Tesla managed to register only marginally more vehicles than its April performance, suggesting limited recovery momentum.

The United Kingdom presents an even more concerning scenario for Tesla. UK sales decreased by 45% compared to May 2024, while the nation’s total EV registrations climbed 28%. Disparity highlights Tesla’s struggle to capitalize on expanding market demand.

Italian market data reinforces the European trend. Tesla deliveries fell 20% year-over-year, even as Italy’s EV sector expanded by nearly 41%. Consistent pattern across major European markets suggests systemic challenges rather than isolated regional issues.

Tesla’s Giga Shanghai operations reflect the company’s difficulties in its second-largest market. China Passenger Car Association reports Tesla’s domestic and export deliveries totaled 61,662 units in May, representing a 15% decline from the previous year.

Local Chinese manufacturers continue to pressure Tesla with competitive pricing strategies and feature-rich offerings. These brands often provide standard equipment that Tesla charges additional fees for, creating value propositions that resonate with cost-conscious consumers.

The 15% reduction encompasses both vehicles sold domestically and those exported to European markets from the Shanghai facility.
