Tesla’s FSD beta software just got another update, this time it’s version 11.4.4, according to tweets from Tesla owners and beta testers. This latest update apparently started rolling out to select Tesla employees and beta testers last night. As one long-time FSD beta tester put it, “As a beta tester for 2+ years, I’m appalled by Tesla’s pace of innovation.”
The release notes for FSD Beta 11.4.4 highlight several improvements to the driver-assistance system, including better short-deadline lane changes to avoid going off-route, improved handling of oncoming traffic on narrow roads, and expanded use of Tesla’s in-house object detection systems to identify more vehicle types with higher accuracy. Here are the key highlights from the release notes:
Improved Short-Deadline Lane Changes: One of the most significant improvements in FSD Beta 11.4.4 is the improved short-deadline lane changes. By better modeling of target lane vehicles, gap selection assertiveness has improved significantly, avoiding going off-route.
Improved Offset Consistency: Another improvement in FSD Beta 11.4.4 is the improved offset consistency. Controlling for static obstacles has improved, and changing offset direction is now smoother, with speed adjustments made more comfortably.
Improved Handling on Narrow Unmarked Roads: Tesla has also improved FSD handling of oncoming cars on narrow unmarked roads. With improved prediction of oncoming car’s trajectory, FSD now leaves enough room for them to pass before re-centering.
Improved Occupancy Flow Prediction: Occupancy Flow prediction has also been improved in FSD Beta 11.4.4. The Occupancy Network for arbitrary moving obstacles has improved by 8%, providing more accurate predictions.
Expanded Usage of Object Ground Truth Autolabeler : Finally, Tesla has expanded the usage of the new object ground truth autolabeler for the NonVRU detection model. This has improved distant vehicle recall and geometry precision for semi-trucks, trailers, and exotic vehicles.
While any improvements to FSD are welcome, Tesla still has a long way to go before its vehicles can operate fully autonomously without human oversight. FSD Beta is still considered a work in progress, and Tesla says “the software is being updated on an ongoing basis.” Will version 11.4.4 move the needle on FSD capabilities? Tesla owners and industry analysts will be watching closely in the coming days and weeks to find out.
