LED Matrix Retro-Fitting For Older Tesla EV? Replace the Headlamps With the New

For Tesla owners, Tesla latest OTA 2024.8 update is shining a whole new light on driving at night. Matrix LED headlight system is finally making its way to more models, and early adopters are flat-out gushing about the futuristic illumination experience.

“Headlights Are Solved Forever”

“The LED matrix software is everything I dreamt of,” one awed owner raved after updating their car. “I ended up driving 10 extra minutes for fun!”

The enthusiastic review highlights some of the marquee Matrix LED capabilities that have owners over the moon. The intelligent system can selectively deactivate LED bulbs to avoid blinding other drivers while keeping the road brightly illuminated. It can even detect and adapt to streetlights.

As the owner proclaimed: “It even turns off high beams where there’s street lighting. Headlights are solved forever going forward.”

Retro-Fitting For Older Teslas EV?

Of course, not every Tesla has the new LED matrix hardware required for the snazzy lighting upgrades. Owners of older models are already clamoring for the chance to retrofit their rides.

“I don’t suppose a retrofit is in the cards?” pleaded one Model 3 owner whose car pre-dates the LED matrix. “My Model 3 is too old, is it feasible to replace the headlamps with the new ones and would it work?”

The good news? Notable Tesla hacker “Green” claims a retrofit is indeed possible by replacing the headlight assemblies and tweaking the vehicle’s software config – something third-party shops have offered for years.

Green: “yes, you can replace the headlights, change the config to say you have new “global” lights (config id 28,change value from 1 to 2) using the set config functionality in service shell (via toolbox service subscription) and then run ecu redeploy.”
