Tesla AI and Autopilot: Close to Production AI Software that Will Ship Soon in FSD v13

Tesla's CyberCab

Tesla’s “We, Robot” event has set the automotive world abuzz. Tesla AI and Autopilot demonstrated its autonomous driving capabilities on an unprecedented scale, offering over 1,300 self-driving trips without a hitch. This wasn’t just a carefully controlled experiment; it was a real-world test of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, running on what the company claims is “close to the production AI software” slated for the upcoming FSD v13 release.

The event featured an impressive lineup of 19 Cybercabs and 29 Model Ys, all operating without human intervention. Over the course of 3.5 hours, these vehicles transported more than 2,000 guests, showcasing the potential of Tesla’s autonomous driving technology in a real-world setting.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s AI and Autopilot software head, shared some fascinating insights about the event. He noted that guests quickly adapted to the presence of self-driving vehicles, treating them much like they would human-driven cars. This natural interaction between pedestrians and autonomous vehicles is a crucial step towards widespread acceptance of the technology.

While the event was undoubtedly a success, it’s important to remember that controlled demonstrations don’t always translate directly to everyday driving conditions. Tesla’s FSD technology still faces regulatory hurdles and public skepticism about the safety of autonomous vehicles.

However, the company’s ability to showcase its technology on such a large scale is a significant milestone. If Tesla can replicate this level of performance in diverse real-world scenarios, it could accelerate the adoption of self-driving technology across the industry.

As we move closer to a future where autonomous vehicles are commonplace, events like “We, Robot” serve as important benchmarks. They not only demonstrate technological progress but also help acclimate the public to the idea of sharing the road with AI-driven cars.

With the promise of FSD v13 on the horizon, Tesla seems poised to take another big step forward in the self-driving race.
