Tesla FSD v12.5.6.1: Completely End-to-End AI Technology Running on Both City Streets and Highway

Tesla FSD

Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) update marks a significant shift in how we interact with autonomous vehicles, as the company rolls out v12.5.6.1 (2024.33.25) to customers beyond its Early Access program.

The latest FSD release represents Tesla’s most ambitious update yet, completely transforming the driver-vehicle relationship. The system now operates on an completely end-to-end basis running on both city streets and highway, as confirmed by Tesla AI senior staff software engineer Phil Duan, marking a four-year journey from initial release to full implementation.

Tesla FSD v12.5.6.1 introduces a revolutionary approach to speed control. Rather than adhering to traditional cruise control concepts, the system now determines optimal speeds based on driving conditions and user preferences. The interface cleverly hides the maximum speed setting after a few seconds, though users retain the ability to adjust it when needed.

The system’s design philosophy mirrors the natural interaction between a passenger and a rideshare driver. Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, Ashok Elluswamy, explains that users simply choose their destination and preferred driving style – chill, standard, or hurry – allowing the AI to handle the rest.

The v12.5.6.1 deployment specifically targets vehicles equipped with AI4 (HW4), while v12.5.5.2 remains exclusive to Cybertruck owners. This strategic rollout ensures optimal performance across Tesla’s diverse vehicle lineup.

Highway driving already demonstrates refined speed profiles, with the “hurry” mode effectively managing faster-paced travel. Ashok acknowledges the need to implement similar profiles for city driving “mad max mode”, suggesting future updates will further enhance urban navigation capabilities.

The new interface prioritizes simplicity without compromising functionality. Maximum speed settings remain accessible when needed, appearing automatically during scroll wheel adjustments or when FSD speed reaches the imposed limit.
