Elon Musk’s ambitious vision has officially launched into reality. Starbase, Texas has been incorporated as an independent city following a successful vote on May 3rd, transforming SpaceX’s Gulf Coast rocket facility into America’s newest municipality. The final tally showed overwhelming support, with 173 votes in favor and 4 against.
“Starbase, Texas Is now a real city!” Elon posted on X shortly after the results were certified.
The incorporation marks a significant milestone for both SpaceX and corporate-led urban development in the United States. Located approximately 32 kilometers from Brownsville, the newly established city encompasses roughly 20 square miles, including the Starbase launch complex, historic Boca Chica Village, and recently constructed executive housing developments.
The vote’s outcome hardly surprised analysts, considering SpaceX employees constituted over 60% of the 283 registered voters in the district. The company had been steadily acquiring property in the area since 2021, now controlling approximately 90% of local real estate.
Under Texas law, the incorporation process moved forward after 10% of local residents signed a petition requesting the vote. Cameron County officials, legally unable to block the election, certified the results within 48 hours of polls closing.
“This represents a fundamental shift in how we think about corporate-community relationships,” said Dr. Elena Vasquez, urban planning professor at the University of Texas. “We’re witnessing the birth of a 21st-century company town, but with modern dynamics and expectations.”
Starbase’s incorporation means the new municipality will now assume responsibility for services previously managed by SpaceX through agreements with Cameron County. These include road maintenance, water systems, and other essential infrastructure.
SpaceX Director of Operations Kathryn Lueders previously detailed that the site already features a medical clinic and school. According to incorporation documents, the tentatively named “Starbase” government will now formally oversee these facilities and expand municipal services to support the growing population.
County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., who received SpaceX’s original petition in December 2024, confirmed this represents Cameron County’s first new city incorporation in three decades. “While we wish them success, we’ll be monitoring this transition carefully to ensure all residents’ needs are properly addressed,” Treviño stated.
Despite the successful vote, Starbase faces immediate challenges. The new municipal government must quickly establish formal procedures, publish financial records, and hold regular public meetings as required by Texas law.
Additionally, pending legislation in the Texas statehouse would grant Starbase authority to close Boca Chica Beach during rocket launches—a proposal generating significant opposition from environmental groups and nearby communities.
“There’s legitimate concern about public access to natural resources,” explained Sierra Rodriguez of the Coastal Conservation Coalition. “While we understand the safety requirements for launches, these beaches belong to all Texans.”
For SpaceX, the incorporation represents a strategic move to “streamline the development of a world-class residential area” supporting their Starship development program. Industry analysts note this could serve as a template for similar corporate municipalities, including Elon Musk’s Snailbrook development near X and The Boring Company headquarters in Bastrop County.
