SpaceX has stealthily expanded the availability of its more affordable Starlink internet option without much fanfare. $80-per-month residential lite plan, which initially launched in just 15 states earlier this year, has now reached more than 30 states across America, including parts of Alaska, California, and Texas, check out Starlink help center page.
This significant expansion comes as SpaceX continues its aggressive push to grow its satellite internet subscriber base. $80-per-month residential lite plan offers a considerably more budget-friendly alternative to the standard $120 monthly service, potentially opening Starlink to customers previously priced out of the satellite internet market.
What the residential lite plan offers
The residential lite Starlink service maintains unlimited data usage but caps download speeds between 50 to 100Mbps – roughly half the performance of the standard plan. Subscribers should also expect potential slowdowns during peak usage hours as the company prioritizes full-price customers when networks become congested.
Despite these limitations, $80-per-month residential lite plan still delivers performance that exceeds many traditional rural internet options, particularly in underserved regions where high-speed alternatives remain scarce.
The quiet expansion of Starlink’s $80-per-month plan coincides with the company’s decision to remove the waitlist for its residential service nationwide. This move suggests SpaceX is shifting strategies after reports indicated Starlink’s U.S. growth slowed considerably last year.
“We’re seeing SpaceX employ multiple tactics to boost adoption rates,” said an industry analyst who requested anonymity. “Price cuts, waitlist removals, and free hardware offers all point to a company determined to accelerate subscriber acquisition.”
In select markets, SpaceX now offers free satellite dishes to customers who commit to a year of service – a significant shift from its previous approach that required customers to purchase hardware upfront for as much as $599.
While the $80-per-month residential lite plan expansion represents a more accessible entry point, SpaceX maintains different pricing structures based on local network capacity. In areas with stretched resources, the company imposes an additional $250 “demand surcharge” for new signups.
This regional pricing strategy highlights the company’s balancing act between growing its customer base and maintaining service quality as its satellite constellation continues to expand.
For customers in rural areas who’ve lacked reliable broadband options, even the $80-per-month residential lite plan with potential speed constraints represents a stellar improvement over existing alternatives.
