New Model Y Performance Prototype Spotted Testing at Nürburgring

Tesla’s new Model Y Performance has been caught testing at Nürburgring, giving us an early look at what could be the EV maker’s most agile crossover yet.

The camouflaged Tesla Model Y Performance prototype wasn’t exactly hiding in plain sight. Engineers have been putting the high-performance electric crossover through its paces at one of the world’s most demanding tracks.

Prototype features substantial upgrades over the current Model Y Performance, though we should note that production models might differ from what’s currently being tested. The company hasn’t officially announced when the revamped new Model Y Performance will launch, but the intensive track testing indicates development is well underway.

The spy photos reveal several performance enhancements that distinguish this prototype from standard new Model Y Juniper. Most notably, the test vehicle sports a prominent rear spoiler that extends further than the one on the current trim, likely providing additional downforce at higher speeds.

The wheels immediately caught photographers’ attention – they strongly resemble the 21-inch spider design from the Model S Plaid. New Model Y Performance prototype appears to use a staggered wheel setup with wider rubber at the rear, optimizing both traction and cornering stability.

Interestingly, while the updated Model 3 Performance received a completely redesigned front bumper, this test mule retains the standard new Model Y juniper front fascia. Could change before production, as aerodynamic improvements are typically finalized later in development.

Though interior shots weren’t available, reports suggest the new Tesla Model Y Performance prototype features redesigned front sport seats with enhanced bolstering – crucial for keeping drivers planted during aggressive cornering maneuvers.

The prototype sits noticeably lower than standard new Model Y variants, a modification that should significantly improve handling dynamics by lowering the center of gravity. Stance adjustment, combined with what’s believed to be an adaptive suspension system, points to a vehicle that can transition between comfortable cruising and track-ready performance.

Bright red brake calipers hint at upgraded stopping power, which would be necessary to match the expected increase in performance. Steering has reportedly been recalibrated as well, offering more immediate response and feedback.

Under its floor, new Tesla Model Y Performance prototype likely shares powertrain components with the updated Model 3 Performance. Would mean a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system generating approximately 510 horsepower and 554 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 79 kWh battery pack.

With these specifications, new Model Y Performance could potentially accelerate from 0-60 mph in roughly 3.2 seconds (with rollout), improving upon the current model’s 3.5-second time and 470 horsepower. Range might remain similar to the current estimate of about 290 miles, unless Tesla incorporates a larger battery pack.

When it arrives, presumably in late 2025, the refreshed Model Y Performance will face increased competition from both traditional automakers and EV startups. Crossover remains Tesla’s best-selling model globally, and these performance enhancements should help maintain its appeal among driving enthusiasts who need more practicality than the Model 3 offers.

Industry analysts suggest these upgrades represent Tesla’s strategy to keep its lineup fresh without complete redesigns, focusing instead on targeted improvements that enhance performance and driver engagement.
