Elon Musk has revealed two significant developments for his AI company xAI during a Y Combinator appearance. Startup is expanding its GPU supercluster from 230k to 340k units, positioning it as the world’s largest single AI cluster, Grok 3.5 promises first-principles reasoning in upcoming beta release. Additionally, Elon confirmed that Tesla and xAI are now working in close partnership.
This xAI GPU expansion represents a substantial increase in computational power for the company’s AI training operations. Enhanced infrastructure will support more sophisticated model development and faster training cycles as the company scales its artificial intelligence capabilities.
The expanded xAI GPU supercluster includes a mix of current and next-gen Nvidia hardware. System currently operates with 150k H100 GPUs and 50k H200 GPUs, both already installed and operational at the company’s facilities.
The Memphis, Tennessee location will host an additional 140k GB200 GPUs, with 30k units already installed and 110k more coming online soon. Configuration creates unprecedented parallel processing capabilities for AI model training and inference operations.
Elon’s description of Tesla and xAI working “closely together” marks an evolution from previous statements about “technical collaboration” mentioned during Tesla earnings calls. While specific details about the partnership structure remain undisclosed, the stronger language suggests deeper integration between the companies.
xAI GPU infrastructure could potentially support Tesla’s FSD development and neural network training requirements. Collaboration may accelerate both companies’ AI development timelines while leveraging shared technological expertise and computational resources.
