Rivian has just rolled out a significant software-based performance upgrade that promises to transform its electric vehicles without requiring a single hardware modification. For $5,000, current dual-motor Rivian owners can now unlock increased power and new driving capabilities through a simple digital purchase.
The OTA update boosts the vehicle’s output to 665 horsepower and 829 lb.-ft. of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds. Rivian software upgrade represents a growing trend in the automotive industry where performance enhancements no longer require physical modifications or dealership visits.
Beyond the raw power increase, the Rivian upgrade introduces three additional driving modes tailored for different conditions:
- Sport: Optimized for aggressive on-road performance
- Rally: Tuned for high-speed off-road driving with controlled slides
- Soft Sand: Calibrated specifically for beach and desert terrain
These join the existing All-Purpose, All-Terrain, and Snow modes, expanding the vehicle’s versatility across different environments.
Cyril Dorsaz, Rivian Product Manager, highlighted the significance of this development on social media: “This is the beauty of a software-defined vehicle: it gets better over time.”
The Rivian upgrade showcases how modern EVs can evolve post-purchase. Unlike traditional vehicles where performance is largely fixed at manufacturing, Rivian has built vehicles with untapped potential that can be unlocked when owners decide they want more capability.
The Rivian performance upgrade is available immediately for both first and second-generation dual-motor vehicles. Owners can purchase it through their Rivian account online or directly through the vehicle’s touchscreen interface. The transaction is straightforward – pay once, and the performance benefits activate without any waiting period or service appointment.
This approach to performance upgrades may reshape how car manufacturers think about vehicle lifecycle and feature deployment, potentially creating new revenue streams while giving customers more flexibility in how their vehicles evolve over time.
