Rivian has officially launched its micromobility division as a standalone company called Also, Inc., securing $105 million in funding from Eclipse Ventures. Announcement comes as Rivian continues to focus on its core electric vehicle business while maintaining a substantial minority stake in the new venture.
The spin-off represents a strategic move for Rivian as it seeks to expand its impact on sustainable transportation beyond its flagship trucks and SUVs. Rivian’s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe will remain connected to Also as Chairman of its Board of Directors.
What began as a stealth program within Rivian has evolved into a separate entity focused exclusively on “small, lightweight vehicles.” Rivian initiated the micromobility project several years ago, applying its expertise in software, electronics, and electric propulsion to create products that would stand out in the increasingly crowded micromobility space.
“For the world to fully transition to electrified transportation, a range of vehicle types and form factors will be needed,” said Scaringe. “I am extremely excited about the innovations developed by the Also team that will underpin a range of highly compelling micromobility products that will help define new categories.”
While Rivian spins off its micromobility business as Also, Inc., the companies aren’t cutting ties completely. Potential collaboration opportunities remain open, including the possibility of Also utilizing portions of Rivian’s retail footprint to showcase its products.
The separation allows both companies to concentrate on their respective markets. Rivian continues to prepare for its R2 midsize SUV launch in Normal, Illinois, with customer deliveries expected in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, Also can develop its micromobility solutions with dedicated resources and a focused business model.
