Apple CarPlay Ultra Finally Arrives, Starting With Aston Martin

Apple CarPlay Ultra

After multiple setbacks and whispers of abandonment, Apple’s next-generation vehicle interface is actually happening. CarPlay Ultra debuts today in North America, making its first appearance exclusively in Aston Martin vehicles, with Apple promising more manufacturers will follow.

The automotive industry has watched and waited as Apple’s promised next-gen CarPlay system encountered delay after delay. Originally announced in 2022, CarPlay Ultra represents the tech giant’s most ambitious push into automotive interfaces yet, bringing Apple’s ecosystem beyond the center console and across every screen in modern vehicles.

Aston Martin today released the first real-world demonstration of CarPlay Ultra via Top Gear’s YouTube channel, showing off integration that’s far more comprehensive than previous CarPlay implementations. Video walks viewers through the setup process, navigation features, and the unprecedented ability to customize instrument clusters – something previously controlled exclusively by automakers.

Unlike standard CarPlay, which essentially functions as a mirrored interface contained within an automaker’s system, CarPlay Ultra extends Apple’s reach to critical vehicle functions and displays. The system now:

  • Controls climate settings directly through Apple’s interface
  • Displays vehicle information like speed and fuel levels
  • Customizes gauge clusters and instrument displays
  • Offers personalized themes that transform the entire cockpit experience
  • Provides widget support across multiple displays

This represents a significant shift in how drivers interact with their vehicles. With CarPlay Ultra, the iPhone becomes the brain of your car’s digital experience, not just an add-on feature.

Apple’s announcement confirms that CarPlay Ultra works with iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5+. While Aston Martin owners get first access, existing vehicles with the British automaker’s next-gen infotainment systems can receive the update through dealer-installed software in the coming weeks.

The company hasn’t provided a comprehensive timeline for other manufacturers, but confirmed Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are working to implement CarPlay Ultra in future models.

CarPlay Ultra arrives at a pivotal moment as automakers struggle to balance proprietary systems with consumer demand for seamless tech integration. By allowing Apple to control more vehicle functions, manufacturers risk losing direct relationships with drivers but gain access to Apple’s polished interface design and ecosystem integration.

The question remains whether CarPlay Ultra will ultra-revolutionize how we experience our vehicles, or if automakers will pump the brakes on giving Apple too much control over the driving experience.
