Lemonade has begun directly integrating with Tesla vehicles through the carmaker’s API. The innovative insurer isn’t just stopping at simplified connectivity—company president Shai Wininger has extended an invitation to Elon Musk to explore offering Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) insurance at a “virtually free price.”
This potential partnership signals an unprecedented shift in the insurance landscape: a major carrier showing greater confidence in AI driving capabilities than human operators.

Lemonade’s new approach eliminates the need for usage-based insurance (UBI) devices in their Pay Per Mile product. “This makes activating Lemonade Car on Teslas effortless and lets us cut hardware and shipping costs, helping lower prices for Tesla drivers even further,” Wininger explained.
Direct connection to Tesla’s systems provides significant advantages beyond convenience. According to Wininger, “Tesla’s API also provides richer and more accurate driving behavior data than traditional UBI devices, enabling us to offer better rewards and discounts for safe driving and FSD usage.”
High cost of insurance represents a significant obstacle for potential Tesla buyers. By dramatically reducing insurance premiums for FSD miles, Lemonade could unlock substantial demand for both new and used Tesla vehicles equipped with the autonomous driving package.
If the initiative proves successful, it may trigger an industry-wide reassessment of how carriers price coverage for autonomous vehicles. Traditional insurers might feel pressured to follow Lemonade’s lead, potentially accelerating the insurance industry’s adaptation to self-driving technology.
Partnership could also pave the way for Tesla’s ambitious Robotaxi plans. As autonomous vehicle fleets expand, comprehensive insurance solutions will remain essential—not just for driving incidents but also for protecting vehicles against weather events, vandalism, and other non-operational risks.
By establishing insurance partnerships now, Tesla positions itself to share liability burdens when its autonomous taxi service launches at scale. Lemonade offer might just be the sweet starting point for a completely reimagined automotive insurance model.
