Tesla’s long-awaited next-gen Roadster is still on schedule to make its debut this year, according to Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen. Speaking on episode 533 of the Ride The Lightning podcast, Franz offered rare confirmation that the repeatedly delayed halo car remains a priority for the EV maker.
“The Roadster will be an amazing car that looks at the limits of physics,” Franz stated. “We’ve really gotten to a point where we are going to be achieving that standard that we set out.”
Tesla Roadster has generated substantial anticipation since its initial announcement in 2017, with Elon making bold performance claims that would shatter existing production car records. Most notably, Elon has targeted a 0-100 km/h time under one second – a benchmark that would represent a quantum leap in production vehicle acceleration.
Franz’s latest comments suggest the engineering team is making substantial progress toward these seemingly impossible metrics. He described the Roadster as “a breathtaking car that defies the limits of physics,” while noting they’re “getting close to meeting the very high standards we’ve set for ourselves.”
Beyond performance specifications, Franz hinted that the Tesla Roadster will feature exclusive design elements not shared with other Tesla models, including “its own complete unique set of paint options.”
“I’m excited to showcase the Roadster for a lot of different reasons,” the design chief added. “The wait will be worth it.”
After numerous delays since its initial announcement, Tesla appears poised to finally unveil the production Roadster. For Tesla enthusiasts who’ve waited nearly eight years, this latest roadmap could finally put them on the fast track to seeing the finished product.
