Waymo and DoorDash have announced a groundbreaking partnership that will bring fully autonomous food deliveries to Phoenix residents. Collaboration will leverage Waymo’s self-driving technology to fulfill DoorDash orders across a massive 315-square-mile service area.
The process is remarkably straightforward for customers. When placing a DoorDash order from participating merchants, users can opt into autonomous vehicle delivery at checkout. If matched with a Waymo vehicle, customers simply open the trunk using the DoorDash app when their order arrives and retrieve their items—no human interaction required.
“We are excited to make everyday errands easier with the Waymo Driver, offering the added peace of mind that comes with our safe and reliable technology,” a Waymo representative stated. “Through our partnership with DoorDash, we leverage our proven delivery experience to provide customers with a seamless, contact-free way to get items they need.”
DashPass subscribers stand to gain additional advantages from this Waymo and DoorDash partnership. David Richter, VP of Business and Corporate Development at DoorDash, emphasized that “DashPass is designed to give consumers consistent value, convenience, and access to the best of their communities.”
Service promises to advance DoorDash’s vision for a “multi-modal autonomous future of local commerce” while providing members access to an innovative delivery experience.
While currently limited to Phoenix, partnership raises questions about potential expansion to other markets where Waymo operates, such as San Francisco. Autonomous delivery model could significantly reduce reliance on human drivers while maintaining or improving service reliability.
