Starlink now lets subscribers choose between two reward types for successful referrals: a cash payout or a service credit. Previously, referral program only offered credits, granting customers a free month of satellite internet service for each person they brought aboard. That option still exists. However, subscribers can now opt for a cash payment instead, sent directly to their bank account.
The switch matters because it changes how customers perceive the value of their recommendations. A service credit only helps if you’re planning to stay subscribed. Cash, on the other hand, works regardless of your future plans. That flexibility explains why some users jumped at the option as soon as it became available.

Here’s where things get complicated. A number of Starlink customers logged into their accounts recently and discovered referral bonuses exceeding $10,000. Catch? They can’t withdraw the money. Balances reflect the program’s structural overhaul rather than a glitch, though the inability to cash out has understandably caused confusion.
SpaceX priced the cash reward at $100 per referral in the US, with support extending to markets including the UK, Australia, Canada, and Mexico. Eligibility, though, comes with conditions. Only active subscribers on Residential and Roam plans qualify. Referrals must also originate from within the same country as the new customer, which rules out cross-border recommendations entirely.
Timing changed too. Rewards previously arrived after a referee maintained service for one month. That window has since doubled, meaning payouts now require two months of active subscription from the referred customer.
SpaceX has also signaled it’s watching for misuse. The company’s support documentation states that referrals must go to individuals who’ve consented to being contacted, and unsolicited marketing could result in program removal. SpaceX further noted it will monitor retention patterns among referred subscribers, flagging any deviation from a country’s typical average as a potential violation. Sign-ups through resellers, retailers, or account transfers won’t count either. Only direct registrations through starlink.com qualify for rewards.
Whether the cash option resolves the confusion around locked bonuses remains to be seen. For now, Starlink customers eyeing referral rewards should read the fine print before assuming their next payout will land where they expect.
