SpaceX has rolled out a new Starlink plan aimed squarely at small boat owners who spend extended time on the water. Called personal maritime, plan appears to be a direct response to months of frustration from the boating community, and it’s reshaping how coastal cruisers can stay connected globally.
Priced at $185/month USD, Starlink Personal Maritime plan includes unlimited data and coverage in territorial waters worldwide. Beyond that, subscribers can access ocean mode, satellite connectivity past 12 nautical miles from shore — at $6 per GB. Notably, the plan carries no 30-day international Roam limit, except in rare cases tied to local regulatory requirements.
This is a meaningful distinction. Earlier this year, SpaceX tightened the screws on its $175/month Roam Unlimited plan, cutting international trip durations from 60 days down to 30. Cheaper Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB tiers lost most of their international capability altogether. Meanwhile, SpaceX discontinued its $400/month Global Roam plan, which had allowed continuous international access on land and along coasts, pointed displaced users toward the $650/month Global Priority plan. That’s a steep jump for someone sailing a modest 35-foot sloop.
Interestingly enough, this launch didn’t happen in a vacuum. Support tickets flooded Starlink.com, and YouTube channels dedicated to sailing and cruising amplified the frustration. SpaceX appears to have taken notice.
In its email to select users, the company described Starlink personal maritime as designed specifically for people who use Starlink on a vessel and remain on the water for extended periods before returning to their home country. That framing signals a deliberate effort to carve out a dedicated tier, rather than forcing boat owners into land-centric plans that don’t reflect how they actually operate.
Covered under the updated Starlink service plan documentation, personal maritime applies only to vessels 40 feet in length or under. That restriction has already drawn complaints from parts of the sailing community on Facebook, though some users report successfully switching to the plan even with vessels slightly exceeding the 40-foot threshold.
Then there’s the Ocean Mode pricing. Previously set at $2 per GB, the rate has now climbed to $6 per GB, a 200% increase. For Roam Unlimited subscribers, that new rate kicks in on September 27th. Personal Maritime users are already seeing the higher cost reflected in their accounts.
SpaceX hasn’t announced Personal Maritime on Starlink.com publicly. Instead, the company appears to be offering it to a curated group of existing users with a documented history of maritime Starlink use, likely to prevent misuse of a plan that circumvents standard Roam restrictions.
To make the switch, users must submit their vessel’s name, flag, length, registration certificate, and identifying information through a Starlink support ticket. It’s a verification-first approach, which makes sense given the circumstances.
For coastal cruisers and long-range passage makers, Personal Maritime isn’t just a plan upgrade — it’s SpaceX finally getting its sea legs.
