Starlink Free Dish Upgrades: What Early Customers Need to Know

Starlink

It’s not every day a tech company circles back to reward the people who took a chance on it first. But that’s exactly what SpaceX is doing with Starlink, if you were one of those early adopters who signed up back in 2020 or 2021 with that round, circular dish, your inbox might be holding some genuinely good news (starlink support article).

Starlink is formally rolling out free dish upgrades for its earliest customers, replacing aging first-gen hardware with a current Standard kit at zero cost.

Who actually qualifies? not everyone makes the cut here, and the criteria are specific. To be eligible, you need to have been among the first wave of Starlink subscribers, early adopters who received the original circular dish when the service launched in 2020, you must still be running that first-generation hardware today.

Starlink Mini? That doesn’t count. It launched in June 2024, which puts it nowhere near the “early customer” window. Circular dish, by contrast, shipped in two variants (Rev 1 and Rev 2), before SpaceX transitioned to its now-familiar flat antenna design in late 2021.

Eligible customers receive a new Standard kit at no cost, along with a free mount. Installation assistance is also available as an opt-in, which is a reasonable touch for customers who might not be particularly technical.

There’s one logistical detail worth flagging: the upgrade isn’t self-service. Starlink’s support page states clearly that eligible customers will receive an invitation by email. So don’t expect to log in and claim it on demand, you’ll need to wait for that official outreach.

Here’s where things get a little more complicated. SpaceX isn’t just swapping hardware and walking away. Once you accept the upgrade, your original circular dish will be deactivated, either when your new device comes online, or 14 days after delivery, whichever happens first. After that point, the hardware won’t function and can’t be transferred to another account or user.

That’s a notable condition, particularly for customers who might have been storing a spare circular dish or lending one to a family member. SpaceX has previously moved to brick dormant dish hardware that required software updates, gen 1 Starlink routers free, and it’s possible some circular units were caught up in that process already.

For what it’s worth, Starlink’s environmental guidance does acknowledge the situation: retired hardware can be returned to a local recycling agency or sent back to Starlink for a refurbishment process.

New Standard hardware isn’t just cosmetically different. Replacement V4 model delivers improved speed and better power efficiency compared to the original circular units. There have also been documented reports of the outer covering on first-gen circular dishes degrading and peeling, a physical deterioration issue on top of the performance gap.

Starlink’s messaging to eligible customers frames the upgrade as both a thank-you and a forward-looking move: “As Starlink looks toward a bright future, we want you connected with us for years to come.” That’s the kind of retention play that actually delivers something tangible rather than just a loyalty badge.

Practically speaking, there isn’t much action required on your end — yet. If you’ve been a Starlink customer since 2020 or early 2021 and you’re still on that original circular hardware, keep a close eye on your email. The invite is the trigger for everything that follows.

It’s also worth making sure your contact email on file with Starlink is current and actively monitored. Missing the invitation window could mean missing the upgrade window entirely, depending on how SpaceX structures the rollout.

For the people who believed in Starlink before it was proven, this upgrade is more than a hardware swap, it’s the company acknowledging that Starlink is formally rolling out free dish upgrades for its earliest customers, and those customers finally get to go full circle.
