Tesla is gearing up to launch an updated version of its popular Model 3 sedan in China. The country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has approved Tesla’s application for the new Model 3 Highland, clearing the way for sales in the vital Chinese market.
Tesla New Refreshed Model 3 Design, Price, SPECS Performance and EPA estimated range
The refreshed Model 3 sports subtle design changes including a revised front fascia and new tail lights. Dimensions remain similar but the exterior refresh gives the electric sedan a more stylish look.
Two versions will be offered in China – a rear-wheel drive Standard Range model starting at 259,900 RMB and an all-wheel drive Long Range model priced from 295,900 RMB.
Performance gets a boost with the Standard Range capable of 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds while the Long Range drops that time to 4.4 seconds. Dual motors provide AWD on the Long Range.
Range estimates are class-leading. The Standard Range is projected to achieve 606 km (376 miles) on the CLTC cycle used in China. Opting for the Long Range extends range to 713 km (443 miles).
Interior upgrades include a new 12.3-inch central touchscreen display and wireless smartphone charging. Tesla’s latest heat pump technology is also included for increased cold weather range.
The refreshed Model 3 gives Tesla an opportunity to reinvigorate sales in China, which have slowed in recent quarters amidst rising competition, local rival BYD led EV sales in China last month.
Tesla will be anxious to ramp production and deliveries of the updated Model 3 to tap into booming demand for electric vehicles in China, which is forecast to represent over 40% of global EV sales this year.
With MIIT approval secured, the sleek new Model 3 Highland will soon hit the streets of cities like Beijing and Shanghai as Tesla looks to regain its momentum in this critical market.
