Tesla’s Giga Shanghai operation is gearing up for a significant transformation of its Model Y offerings. Internal sources have confirmed the EV maker’s plans to introduce two distinct variants that could reshape the competitive landscape of the electric SUV market.

The refreshed Model Y, known internally as “Juniper,” represents Tesla’s commitment to continuous innovation. Production lines at the Giga Shanghai facility are already humming with activity, as the company prepares for a January 2025 launch. The updates mirror many of the improvements seen in the Model 3 refresh.

Engineers have focused on enhancing both form and function. New Model Y incorporates refined exterior styling, upgraded battery technology, and an enhanced driver-assistance suite. These modifications aim to maintain Tesla’s edge in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle space.

In a strategic move to capture more of the family market, Tesla’s introducing a 6-seat configuration for the Model Y. This variant, slated for Q4 2025 delivery, addresses growing demand for flexible seating arrangements in premium electric SUVs.

Tesla Giga Shanghai dual-production approach allows Tesla to maintain current Model Y availability while ramping up the refreshed version.
