Nio’s subsidiary ONVO Auto is undergoing a significant leadership change as president Ai Tiecheng announced his resignation today through the ONVO App. Ai Tiecheng is stepping down from his dual positions as ONVO Auto president and Nio senior vice president, acknowledging that the ONVO L60 hasn’t met sales expectations despite its market potential.
The Chinese EV maker has quickly appointed Shen Fei, who previously headed Nio’s energy business, as the new president of ONVO Auto. In this capacity, Shen will oversee all of Onvo’s sales operations and regional management, reporting directly to Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong.
Shen brings substantial company experience to ONVO Auto, having joined Nio in 2015 during its formative stages. As one of the company’s most seasoned senior vice presidents, he’ll face the immediate challenge of turning around the underperforming brand.
The restructuring extends beyond just a leadership swap. ONVO’s R&D, supply chain, and quality departments will now report directly to Nio CEO Li Bin, while marketing will fall under Qin Lihong’s supervision. Shift suggests the parent company is taking a more direct approach to Onvo Auto’s operations, presumably to improve resource allocation and operational efficiency.
Last October, the now-departing Ai Tiecheng had established ambitious goals for the Onvo L60, projecting deliveries would exceed 10k units in just its third month and reach 20k by the seventh month. The acknowledgment that these targets weren’t met likely contributed to the leadership shuffle at Onvo Auto.
The changes at Onvo Auto reflect Nio’s commitment to addressing performance issues quickly, bringing in trusted leadership to navigate the competitive Chinese EV market. For Nio, this Onvo opportunity can’t be auto-matically guaranteed without hands-on attention from its most experienced executives.
