Samsung SDI has achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle battery sector. The company’s cylindrical battery technology powered a Lucid Air Grand Touring to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance driven by an electric car on a single charge.
Record-setting journey began in June 2025, when a Lucid Air Grand Touring embarked on an epic drive from St. Moritz, Switzerland, to Munich, Germany. Vehicle covered an impressive 1,205 kilometers on a single charge, navigating diverse terrain including highways, secondary roads, and challenging Alpine mountain routes. Achievement surpassed the previous record of 1,045 kilometers by a substantial 160-kilometer margin.
Samsung SDI revealed that the record-breaking Lucid Air Grand Touring was equipped with 6,600 units of its 21700 cylindrical batteries. These power cells enabled the vehicle to achieve its remarkable range while maintaining the performance standards expected from a luxury electric vehicle.
Lucid Air Grand Touring boasts a WLTP range of 960 kilometers under standard conditions and maintains an energy efficiency rating of 13.5 kWh per 100 kilometers. Despite its focus on range, the vehicle doesn’t compromise on performance, delivering 831 PS of power and achieving a top speed of up to 270 kilometers per hour.
Samsung SDI and Lucid have maintained their collaboration since Lucid’s founding in 2016. The luxury electric vehicle manufacturer operates a state-of-the-art, vertically integrated manufacturing facility in Arizona, demonstrating its commitment to advanced production methods.
A Samsung SDI official emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating that powering the world’s longest-range vehicle demonstrates their technological capabilities. The partnership between Samsung SDI and Lucid is expected to strengthen further as both companies work to expand their global market share and develop products that balance performance with safety.
