Nearly nine years. That’s how long reservation holders, Tesla enthusiasts, and automotive analysts have been waiting for the next-gen Tesla Roadster to move from a stunning 2017 concept stage into something real. Well, the wait is almost over. Tesla took to X with a three-word post, “Go for launch”, locking in October 1, 2026, for the reveal of the next-generation Roadster. Invitations have gone out, a countdown clock is live, and there’s genuine hardware to show. This isn’t another teaser. This is real.
The event invite confirms Tesla will hold the Roadster event on October 1, 2026, in Waco, Texas. Invite reads: “ROADSTER. October 1, 2026. Waco, Texas. Join us. Food and refreshments will be available.” That’s a notably tight RSVP window. Tesla is asking invitees to submit their RSVP before midnight Pacific Time on Wednesday, September 16. Tickets are non-transferable, IDs will be checked at the event, no one under 21 will be admitted, and guests must arrive and check in together.

It’s worth noting the location choice is no accident. Waco sits about 90 minutes north of Tesla’s Austin headquarters and a short drive from SpaceX’s McGregor engine test site. That proximity to SpaceX infrastructure is very much intentional, given what the next-gen Tesla Roadster reportedly has under, or rather, below, its body.
Don’t take that blurred image at face value. Teaser, seen upside down, shows an angular tail, a large rear wing, and four plumes at the back where the cold-gas thrusters sit. That’s not a styling exercise. Those thrusters are central to what makes this next-gen Tesla Roadster genuinely unlike anything Tesla — or really, anyone — has produced before.
Information reports the car could come in two versions, including a limited model with SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters that could let it briefly lift off the ground. Elon has previously claimed those thrusters could cut the car’s 0–100 km/h time to under one second. Whether that holds up in production remains to be seen, but the engineering ambition is undeniable.
Let’s be direct about the timeline here. Original Roadster prototype debuted on November 16, 2017, with production targeted for 2020. That deadline came and went, followed by at least seven more missed timelines. In fact, this is the fifth date Tesla has given for the Roadster in 2026 alone, April 1, late April, “a month or so,” August, and now October.
At any traditional automaker, a product with this development timeline would be heading into its third generation by now. But the next-gen Tesla Roadster isn’t operating under traditional constraints. This vehicle, by Tesla’s own admission, isn’t designed around cost efficiency — it’s designed around the question of what’s actually possible.
Some reservation holders put down $250k to hold a spot in line, and they weren’t doing it for range or cargo space. They were betting on performance unshackled from the compromises that define mass-market EVs.
Originally announced with a 200 kWh dual-layer battery pack, a claimed 1,000 km highway range, and a 0–100 km/h time of 1.9 seconds, the next-gen Tesla Roadster represents what Tesla looks like when efficiency isn’t the primary design constraint. CyberCab sits at one extreme of that equation — maximum efficiency. Roadster sits at the other, maximum performance.
Elon personally confirmed the October 1st Roadster unveil on X, adding that the event will be “out of this world.” When pressed further, Elon responded with a simple “Excitement guaranteed.”
Elon says deliveries likely won’t start until 2027 or 2028. So there’s still a real gap between the October 1 reveal and the moment someone actually drives one off a lot. That said, next-gen Tesla Roadster now has something it hasn’t had in years: a confirmed date, a confirmed venue, and actual invitations in people’s hands.
For a vehicle this long in development, October 1 isn’t just a launch event, it’s the Roadster finally getting off the ground.
