Tesla has officially confirmed a CyberCab launch event in Austin, Texas, set for August 23. According to The Information, the company has told employees it’s gearing up for a public rollout of CyberCab as soon as this month, starting with staff rides on public roads before folding the vehicles into its commercial ride-hailing service days later. That’s a tight, aggressive timeline, and Tesla appears to mean it.
Tesla has taken several preparatory steps in recent weeks, including test driving, providing employee rides on private roads, and conducting training with local first responders. That’s not a company hedging its bets, that’s a company with a launch checklist nearly fully ticked off.
Tesla completed emergency training with Austin first responders last week on handling the vehicles, including moving them if needed. Critically, the company has remote operators who can monitor and take control in emergencies, a safety layer that distinguishes this deployment from fully unattended operation.
Progression here isn’t arbitrary. Tesla has been testing Cybercabs on public roads across the country, including in Austin, since June. In July, the company began allowing employees to take CyberCab rides on private roads around its Austin campus and has been collecting feedback from them.
This isn’t just Tesla’s existing Robotaxi product with upgraded software. 2-seater has no pedals or steering wheel, and will rely completely on Tesla’s FSD software to operate. That’s a fundamental design departure.
Tesla currently runs its Austin Robotaxi service with about 186 registered Model Y vehicles. It remains unclear whether CyberCabs will replace or supplement that fleet. What is clear is the strategic intent, 2-seat CyberCab is central to Tesla’s strategy to generate revenue from an autonomous network rather than relying solely on vehicle sales.
End of August is currently the internal target for the public launch, but the timeline could shift as Tesla continues final preparations. Either way, Austin’s streets are about to get a lot more interesting, looks like Tesla’s really driving this one home.
