Revving up the auto industry, MediaTek and NVIDIA have announced their partnership to take smart cars to the next level. MediaTek, a major player in the Android smartphone market with its Dimensity chipset platform, and NVIDIA, a leader in the computer graphics industry, are joining forces to incorporate NVIDIA’s GPU and AI software technology into MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto platform.
With the increasing demand for intelligent cars and robots, NVIDIA has been dedicated to empowering them with AI technology. The company has released multiple chips that can be used for autonomous driving research and development, as well as mass production of driving assistance functions. Meanwhile, MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto platform integrates NVIDIA’s GPU into the design architecture and achieves fast information exchange between chips through NVIDIA’s NVLink-C2C technology to meet the huge computing demands of the automotive industry.
The Dimensity Auto platform also supports NVIDIA’s DRIVE OS, DRIVE IX, CUDA parallel computing architecture, and TensorRT deep learning inference technology, providing powerful computing support for intelligent cabins and intelligent driving. MediaTek will develop a car SoC that integrates NVIDIA GPU chiplets and supports interconnect technology for smooth and high-speed communication between the chiplets.
Chiplet technology, a quirky yet innovative solution for improving SoC performance in the post-Moore’s Law era, will be used in this partnership. It involves partitioning a chip’s different functions into bare chips and then combining them like building blocks, using packaging technology. Each bare chip unit can adopt different manufacturing processes according to functional requirements, reducing costs while improving chip performance.
With the integration of NVIDIA’s GPU and AI software technology into MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto platform, smart cars will have access to powerful computing capabilities, advanced graphics computing, and artificial intelligence. The result will be safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable driving experiences for everyone.
