Li Auto has announced its most ambitious software update yet. The Chinese EV manufacturer will roll out version 7.0 to all AD Max users on December 31st, marking a substantial leap forward in self-driving capabilities.
In a revealing installment of Li Auto’s AI Talk Interview, CEO Li Xiang and VP of Autonomous Driving R&D Lang Xianpeng shared their uncompromising vision for the future of self-driving technology.
The 7.0 update introduces an enhanced end-to-end autonomous driving system that leverages Vision Language Models (VLM) for both highway and urban scenarios. At its core, this update represents Li Auto’s commitment to bridging the gap between human perception and car intelligence.
The new software package brings several groundbreaking features to Li Auto’s vehicles. The system now displays ten potential navigation paths in real-time, offering unprecedented transparency into the AI’s decision-making process. This visualization isn’t just for show – it’s a crucial step toward building user trust in autonomous systems.
Perhaps the most intriguing addition is the Mind GPT-3o multimodal AI assistant. This system works in conjunction with Mind Diffusion V2.0 imaging technology to create what Li Auto calls a more “intuitive and responsive” driving experience. The integration enables smoother transitions between manual and autonomous control, particularly in challenging scenarios like heavy fog conditions.
The update tackles one of autonomous driving’s most persistent challenges: navigating the first and last 100 meters of any journey. Lang Xianpeng, Li Auto’s VP of autonomous driving R&D, notes that this capability is crucial for achieving true supervised autonomous driving.
The system now handles:
- Residential parking complexes
- Campus road networks
- Urban street navigation
- Highway driving sequences
- Automated toll station passages
Li Auto’s projection of achieving L3 autonomous driving capabilities by 2025 isn’t just ambitious – it’s a roadmap for the industry. The company’s dual-system approach, combining end-to-end processing with VLM technology, positions them as pioneers in the autonomous driving space.
