Volkswagen’s resurrection of the Scout nameplate marks a significant shift in the automotive landscape, as the brand emerges with two all-electric vehicles designed to capture the American market’s growing appetite for capable EVs.
Volkswagen’s strategic decision to manufacture these vehicles in South Carolina demonstrates their commitment to the U.S. market. While production won’t begin until 2027, the company has opened $100 reservations for both models, signaling confidence in their long-term vision.
The Scout Traveler SUV enters the market with specifications that challenge existing electric offerings. Starting under $60,000, it combines impressive range capabilities with serious off-road credentials. The vehicle boasts up to 350 miles of range, with an innovative option to extend to 500 miles using a built-in gas generator.
Both the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck share remarkable performance metrics, achieving 0-60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds. This acceleration, coupled with substantial ground clearance and water fording capabilities, positions these vehicles as genuine off-road contenders.
The Terra pickup truck maintains Scout’s utilitarian heritage while embracing modern technology. Its 5.5-foot bed includes multiple power outlets, making it a mobile power station for work sites or camping trips. The 10,000-pound towing capacity exceeds many conventional pickup trucks.
Both vehicles feature advanced charging architecture, including:
- 800-volt electrical systems
- NACS charging compatibility
- Up to 350kW fast charging
- Bi-directional charging capability
The commitment to capability continues with:
- Optional 35-inch tires
- 12 inches of ground clearance
- Three feet of water fording ability
- Robust towing capacities
Volkswagen’s decision to price both vehicles under $60,000 positions them competitively in the growing electric truck and SUV segment. The inclusion of range-extending generators addresses common EV adoption concerns while maintaining environmental benefits.
VW Scout’s return suggests that the path forward doesn’t require leaving tradition behind – it just needs to be recharged for a new generation. Whether these vehicles will electrify the market as much as their specifications suggest remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: this Scout’s honor comes with a plug.
