Social platform X appears poised to provide free access to its AI chatbot, Grok, which was previously limited to paid users. According to reports from app researchers and users, some individuals in certain regions can already utilize Grok without a subscription, as X is currently testing this access in New Zealand.
The free version of Grok comes with several limitations. Users are restricted to 10 queries per day for the Grok-2 model and 20 queries for the Grok-2 mini model. Additionally, image analysis is capped at 3 queries per day. To access the free Grok service, user accounts must be registered for at least 7 days and linked to a mobile number.
xAI introduced the Grok-2 model with image generation features in August, subsequently adding image recognition capabilities last month. These features were previously exclusive to paid X users, and offering free access to Grok may help xAI broaden its user base, speed up product feedback, and better compete with other AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Last month, xAI was reportedly seeking to raise billions of dollars at a valuation of $40 billion. The decision to offer a free tier of Grok may be part of the company’s strategy to expand its user base and strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.
By offering a free version of its chatbot, xAI is likely aiming to attract a wider audience, gather valuable feedback, and cement its place as a leader in the AI industry.
