Tesla’s flagship vehicles are getting an update. During Ride The Lightning podcast appearance, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, confirmed that both the Model S and Model X will receive significant updates later in 2025. Marks another evolution for Tesla’s premium offerings, which last saw major architectural changes a few years ago.
The upcoming refresh isn’t just about cosmetic changes. Lars’s casual revelation suggests Tesla maintains a strong commitment to its original flagship models, despite their lower sales volumes compared to the Model 3 and Y. “They’re not going anywhere anytime soon,” he emphasized.
While specific details remain under wraps, industry analysts and Tesla watchers anticipate several key technological advancements:
The refresh could introduce an 800V high-voltage architecture, complemented by a 48V low-voltage system. This upgrade would potentially enable faster charging capabilities and improved power distribution. Additionally, a Gigabit ring Ethernet system might enhance the vehicles’ internal communications network.
Tesla may incorporate an acoustic system that utilizes the car body’s integrated cavity, potentially improving sound quality and reducing road noise. Tesla’s in-house developed glass could also make an appearance, offering enhanced durability and thermal management.
Several control system updates might be included, such as drive-by-wire technology and rear-wheel steering capabilities. These additions would improve handling and maneuverability, especially important for the larger Model X.
Tesla’s approach to announcing this update – through a casual podcast conversation rather than a formal press release – aligns with their unconventional marketing strategy. Tesla’s roadmap favors quiet iteration over loud proclamation. In an industry racing to shout the loudest, engineers let the machinery do the talking.
Tesla’s still got some Model S/X surprises up its sleeve.
