NHTSA Investigates Tesla Robotaxi After Wrong-Lane Videos Go Viral

Tesla Robotaxi Service Officially Launches in Austin

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Tesla’s Robotaxi service following online videos showing potentially dangerous driving behaviors during the company’s Austin test operations. Probe centers on footage from June 22, which captured Tesla’s autonomous vehicles speeding and attempting to enter incorrect lanes during public demonstrations.

This investigation represents standard regulatory oversight rather than an unusual targeting of Tesla. The NHTSA has previously investigated other autonomous vehicle operators, including Waymo, GM’s Cruise, and Amazon’s Zoox, following similar safety concerns. However, the timing creates additional scrutiny for Tesla’s newly launched Robotaxi service, which began operations with significant fanfare just days earlier.

A podcaster named Rob Maurer uploaded footage of his Tesla Robotaxi experience, with a 12-second clip subsequently going viral on social media platforms. Video shows the vehicle repeatedly attempting to enter the wrong lane—a potentially dangerous maneuver that required intervention to prevent a serious traffic violation.

What remains unclear is whether the correction came from Tesla’s remote operator team monitoring the fleet or if the vehicle’s FSD system independently recognized and corrected the error. Ambiguity highlights ongoing questions about the reliability and decision-making capabilities of Tesla’s autonomous technology in real-world scenarios.

Industry experts note that NHTSA investigations are routine when safety concerns emerge with autonomous vehicle operations. Agency’s role involves monitoring new technologies and seeking clarification from companies when potential violations occur. Tesla will likely address any identified issues through software updates, similar to how other companies have responded to regulatory inquiries.

Critics continue to question whether Tesla’s technology is ready for widespread deployment, pointing to incidents like the wrong-lane attempts as evidence of system limitations. However, supporters argue that such events demonstrate the importance of current safety protocols, including human monitors and operational restrictions.

As Tesla navigates this regulatory review, the company must balance rapid deployment with safety requirements. Whether this investigation becomes a significant obstacle or simply another step in the autonomous vehicle approval process remains to be seen. For now, Tesla’s Robotaxi operations continue under close supervision—both human and regulatory—as the company works to keep its autonomous ambitions on the right track.
