Tesla Driver, Not Autopilot, Dodged Falling Plane in Viral Video That Sparked False FSD Claims

A dramatic dashcam video showing a Tesla narrowly avoiding a crashing military aircraft has sparked widespread misinformation online. The footage, which captured a U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command OA-1K Skyraider II flying dangerously low over an Oklahoma highway before crashing, quickly spread across social media platforms with misleading claims about Tesla’s autonomous driving technology.

The incident occurred last Thursday when the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Oklahoma City. While the Tesla successfully avoided the falling plane, contrary to viral claims, the vehicle wasn’t operating on FSD mode during the heart-stopping moment.

X added a community note to posts containing the video, stating: “The driver has stated that they were driving manually at the time of this incident.”

After the video gained traction on TikTok, Tesla enthusiasts reshared it with captions suggesting “the Tesla was in FSD mode and managed to avoid the crash” and that “FSD saved their lives.” These claims spread rapidly despite lacking factual basis.

Original driver has since clarified: “I was driving manually. FSD is great, but in a situation like that, there’s no way it could have avoided the plane.” X added a community note to posts containing the video, stating: “The driver has stated that they were driving manually at the time of this incident.”

Nevertheless, several prominent Tesla supporters continued circulating the false narrative about FSD’s involvement, highlighting how quickly misinformation can take flight even when the facts have landed.
