SpaceX Files Starlink Mobile Trademark for New Cellular Service

Starlink Direct To Cell

SpaceX has submitted trademark applications for “Starlink Mobile” and “Powered by Starlink,” signaling a potential expansion into direct cellular services. Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office on October 16, arrived shortly after CEO Elon Musk publicly discussed competing with established wireless providers.

Timing aligns with SpaceX’s recent $17 billion acquisition of radio spectrum from EchoStar, Boost Mobile’s parent company. Purchase represents a substantial investment in infrastructure that could transform how the company delivers satellite-based connectivity.

Starlink Mobile trademark application covers telecommunications and communications services, including video and data transmission to mobile devices and cellular personal communication services. Broad scope suggests SpaceX is preparing to offer comprehensive wireless capabilities beyond its current satellite internet offerings.

The “Powered by Starlink” filing applies to identical sectors, potentially indicating branding for partner integrations or business-to-business services. Both applications demonstrate a clear strategy to establish market presence in wireless communications.

SpaceX already provides cellular Starlink service through partnerships with T-Mobile domestically and international carriers like Rogers in Canada and KDDI in Japan. Technology relies on orbiting satellites rather than traditional cell towers to reach users in areas lacking coverage.

However, the existing service operates at reduced speeds, sufficient for lower-quality video calls, social media applications, and text messaging. The recent EchoStar spectrum acquisition should address these bandwidth constraints, enabling 4G LTE-equivalent performance.

SpaceX intends to deploy up to 15k+ next-gen Starlink V3 satellites to support enhanced cellular capabilities. Regulatory filings indicate the company will use both satellite and ground-based equipment to deliver comprehensive cell coverage.

Elon emphasized that SpaceX won’t eliminate existing carriers. “To be clear, we’re not going to put the other carriers out of business,” he stated on the All-in Podcast. “But yes, you should be able to have Starlink like you have an AT&T, or T-Mobile, or Verizon.”
