Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers Communications is taking a bold step forward in its mission to expand connectivity across the nation’s vast wilderness. The company’s leadership, including CTO Mark Kennedy, visited SpaceX’s Florida facility this week, marking a significant milestone in their partnership to bring Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service to Canadian users.
The collaboration between Rogers and SpaceX represents a transformative approach to addressing Canada’s connectivity challenges. During their visit, Kennedy and his team received an extensive tour of SpaceX’s facilities, witnessing firsthand the intricate processes behind rocket and satellite processing.
The partnership aims to extend mobile coverage to areas where traditional cellular infrastructure falls short. “We’re proud to be working with SpaceX to bring satellite-to-mobile phone coverage to ensure Canadians stay connected in areas beyond the limits of terrestrial networks,” Kennedy stated during the facility tour.
SpaceX’s Benjamin Longmier, Sr. Director of Satellite Engineering, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress. The implementation will roll out in phases, beginning with text capabilities before expanding to include data services.
The Rogers team’s visit coincided with the Starlink 10-13 launch, providing them with a real-time demonstration of SpaceX’s operational capabilities. This timing underscores the practical aspects of the partnership and its immediate relevance to Canadian telecommunications infrastructure.
As Canada’s designated Direct-to-Cell Starlink provider, Rogers is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation connectivity solutions. The service promises to bridge critical communication gaps across Canada’s remote regions.
