General Motors has unveiled the Hummer X, a mid-sized EV concept arriving in both SUV and pickup form, positioning itself as a leaner, more configurable alternative to the current production Hummer EV lineup.
At 116 inches of wheelbase and 188.3 inches in total length, the Hummer X SUV is a notably more compact proposition — 10 and 8 inches shorter than the production Hummer SUV, respectively. The pickup, meanwhile, trims five inches off the wheelbase and 10 inches from the overall length compared to the existing Hummer truck.
What separates the Hummer X from a typical auto show exercise is GM’s FLEX FAB manufacturing approach. Designed for fast, small-batch, on-demand production, it applies additive manufacturing principles to metal fabrication — without the need for specialized stamping tools. The result? Multiple designs can run through the same machines, giving GM a manufacturing edge that’s cost-efficient and production-ready.
Both models carry a 57% FLEX FAB percentage in their construction, a figure that signals how serious GM is about this platform’s eventual viability beyond concept status.
SUV variant rolls on 18-inch aluminum wheels with Goodyear Rock tires measuring 315/75R18 — 37 inches in outer diameter — delivering 13.2 inches of ground clearance. Pickup pivots to a street-oriented 305/55R22 configuration on 22-inch aluminum wheels, maintaining 12.5 inches of clearance with a 35-inch tire diameter.
Both variants incorporate Multimatic shocks, beadlock wheels, removable fender flares, and underbody protection built for serious terrain. Inside, the cockpit’s stackable displays reconfigure based on the task — rock crawling, trail running, or highway miles.
Visually, GM’s design team gave each model strategic body cutouts that set them apart from the larger Hummer EVs. SUV’s contrasting red canopy over an open-air roof stands out immediately, while black bumpers and fender treatments add visual weight along the wider body panels.
GM hasn’t confirmed production intent — but FLEX FAB’s architecture signals this isn’t a concept built strictly for a show floor. Platform’s configurable foundation could realistically position the Hummer X as a serious contender in the competitive mid-sized electric off-roader segment.
For GM, this isn’t just a show car. It’s a calculated statement about where the brand is heading — and if FLEX FAB delivers on its promise, the next chapter for the Hummer nameplate might just be its most X-traordinary yet.
