Tesla Model Y L Fall Unveiling: Extended Wheelbase EV Targets Family Market

Tesla Model Y L Fall Unveiling

Tesla China has officially confirmed that the Tesla Model Y L will make its debut later this fall, marking the company’s first long-wheelbase variant of its popular crossover. Announcement follows certification photos published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Tesla Model Y L represents Tesla’s response to consumer demands for increased interior space and enhanced comfort. MIIT’s latest product announcement confirms several technical specifications that distinguish this variant from the standard Model Y currently in production.

Model Y L stretches significantly beyond its Model Y refresh. At 4976 mm in length compared to 4797 mm, the vehicle gains 179 mm of additional space. Wheelbase extends to 3040 mm from 2890 mm, providing 150 mm more interior room for passengers.

Height increases to 1668 mm from 1624 mm, while width remains unchanged at 1920 mm. These dimensional changes result in a curb weight of 2088 kg and gross vehicle weight of 2651 kg, reflecting the structural modifications required for the extended platform.

Longer wheelbase and extended dimensions suggest Tesla’s focus on rear-seat space and ride comfort, targeting customers seeking a more premium family EV experience. Positioning could appeal to markets where rear passenger comfort carries particular importance.

Model Y L features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system utilizing motors labeled 3D3 and 3D7. Units deliver 142 kW and 198 kW respectively, maintaining Tesla’s commitment to performance despite the vehicle’s increased size.

The configuration enables a top speed of 201 km/h, ensuring the extended variant doesn’t compromise driving dynamics for additional space. Balance between performance and practicality aligns with Tesla’s brand positioning across its vehicle lineup.

While Tesla hasn’t shared additional details regarding pricing or availability timelines, MIIT certification suggests production preparations are advancing. Fall unveiling will likely provide clarity on market positioning and competitive strategy for this extended variant.

Model Y L appears ready to stretch the boundaries of what customers expect from electric crossovers.
