Tesla’s three-row SUV story has quietly shifted from speculation to near-certainty, and the timing couldn’t be more deliberate. Elon teased the arrival of a larger vehicle this week after a user on X urged Tesla to launch a minivan, responding simply: “Something way cooler than a minivan is coming.” That’s not a throwaway comment, it’s a product signal from a CEO who rarely teases without a plan behind it.
Tesla’s three-row ambitions are actually unfolding on two separate tracks right now, and that distinction matters for U.S. buyers. In August 2025, Tesla launched the Model Y L in China, a longer-wheelbase, 6-seat variant with a redesigned roof and a premium 2+2+2 cabin layout. Vehicle is already expanding internationally. It’s now confirmed for Australia and New Zealand, and it’s been performing well in Asian markets since launch.

Then there’s the Tesla three-row SUV that’s got the internet spinning — the so-called CyberSUV. A Cybertruck-derived three-row SUV appeared as a clay model in the background of an official Tesla video in 2025, and drone footage captured outside Giga factory Texas appears to show a large Model Y L vehicle shell shipped from Giga Shanghai.
What separates a true Tesla three-row SUV from the competition isn’t just seating, it’s the storage architecture. A CyberSUV built on the Cybertruck’s 48V architecture and steer-by-wire system would let Tesla scale its most advanced technology into a full “family adventure” category, competing directly against the Kia EV9 and Rivian R1S. Fold the third row, you’ve got cargo space. Fold the second row, you’ve got a hauler. Tesla’s always maximized every inch, this won’t be different.
Model Y L already offers an estimated 327-mile range, a 16-inch central touchscreen, and adjustable second- and third-row seating, and that’s just the stretched Model Y. A purpose-built Tesla three-row SUV with Cybertruck DNA could raise that bar considerably.
Honestly? Whatever Elon’s got planned, it’s shaping up to be one family hauler that’s truly in a row of its own.
