Tesla’s Giga Texas factory has hit a huge milestone by producing over 10 million 4680 battery cells this week, 4680 battery is Tesla’s third-generation cylindrical cell. With higher energy density and improved performance, it’s addressing range anxiety concerns and reducing reliance on imported battery technology.
Tesla 4680 battery is also cost-effective, which is a significant advantage for Tesla. By reducing production and assembly costs by about 86%, the company can increase profits and indirectly reduce the selling price. And with a 69% reduction in cost per kWh, the 4680 battery is making electric cars more accessible to a wider audience.
So, what makes the 4680 battery so special? Compared to the 2170 battery, the 4680 battery has a 5x increase in single-cell energy, which means it can increase the vehicle’s driving range by 16%. The power output has also been increased by 6x, with higher density. And with only 950 cells required to form a battery pack with an energy density of approximately 330Wh/kg, it’s a cost-effective solution for electric cars.
But the biggest advantage of the 4680 battery is its thermal stability. Using laser-welded tabs, Tesla has removed the main heating components of the battery, reducing the internal resistance and improving the battery’s thermal stability. This is a significant development that enables the battery to perform better in extreme temperatures.
Producing the ten millionth 4680 cell at Giga Texas is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it offers higher energy density and improved performance, addressing range anxiety concerns. Secondly, scaling up production will lead to cost reductions, making electric cars more accessible to a wider audience. Thirdly, the 4680 cell can be used for energy storage applications, further reducing reliance on finite resources. And finally, it creates more job opportunities, which is always a positive development.
Those 10 million 4680 cells can power around 12,000 Model Y, At the end of December 2022, they were producing at a rate of 868k per week. Since then, another 24 weeks have passed.
Tesla’s Giga Texas factory is leading the charge. With improved performance, cost savings, and thermal stability, the 4680 battery is making electric cars more accessible and sustainable.
