In an unexpected twist, Starlink users are reporting higher satisfaction levels than those using faster fiber networks. This revelation comes from a recent survey conducted by Recon Analytics, shedding light on the evolving landscape of internet connectivity in the United States.
Despite fiber networks offering superior speeds of 1Gbps or more, Starlink has managed to capture the hearts of its users. The satellite internet service received better recommendation scores compared to major fiber providers, marking a significant milestone in its journey.
Roger Entner, founder of Recon Analytics, notes that Starlink is “now making an impact” with its subscriber count in the US surpassing 1.4 million. The survey, which gathered responses from approximately 1,300 Starlink users, reveals a strong preference for the service across various metrics.
Starlink users gave the service an impressive +42 score for the complete experience, outperforming major fiber providers, large fixed wireless access offerings, and traditional cable and DSL companies. The satellite internet service also topped the charts in user recommendations for video streaming and maintaining Wi-Fi connections.
What’s driving this high level of satisfaction? Entner suggests it’s primarily due to Starlink’s ability to provide internet access in areas previously underserved by broadband options. About 85% of the surveyed Starlink users reside in rural areas, with 11% reporting they had never subscribed to a home internet service before.
For many Starlink users, the service represents a significant upgrade from their previous internet options—or lack thereof. As Entner puts it, “With Starlink, there isn’t an alternative. It’s where do I come from? And I come from misery.”
This stark contrast in experience likely contributes to the high satisfaction rates. Users who previously had limited or no internet access are now enjoying a service that meets their needs, leading to overwhelmingly positive feedback.
While fiber networks still received positive ratings, users were less enthusiastic compared to Starlink subscribers. Entner suggests this could be due to the higher costs associated with fiber internet, which can range from $60 to over $100 per month.
“Fiber is technically the better product,” Entner acknowledges. “But is it three-times better in terms of cost? Eh.” This price-to-performance ratio seems to be a key factor in user satisfaction, with Starlink offering a more appealing balance for many.
Despite its strong performance in many areas, Starlink isn’t without its challenges. The survey revealed lower satisfaction levels with SpaceX’s customer service and billing support. Additionally, users expressed negative views about the in-store experience when purchasing Starlink hardware from big box retailers, (Starlink Internet Dishes Are Invading Walmart’s Shelves).
These areas of concern present opportunities for Starlink to further enhance its service and solidify its position in the market. As the company continues to expand and refine its offerings, addressing these pain points could lead to even higher satisfaction rates.
Starlink beam its way into more homes, it’s clear that the service is more than just a flash in the satellite pan. With its ability to connect the previously unconnected and provide a satisfying internet experience, Starlink is proving that sometimes, the sky’s the limit when it comes to user satisfaction.
