Norway has once again shattered expectations in the electric vehicle arena. September 2024 saw an unprecedented 96.4% of all new car registrations being purely electric, up from an already impressive 90.0%. This surge marks a significant leap towards the country’s ambitious goal of achieving 100% EV registrations by 2025.
The Norwegian roads welcomed 12,495 new electric cars in September, eclipsing the previous record market share of 94.3% set just a month earlier. Out of 12,966 total new vehicle registrations, a mere 471 cars weren’t battery-powered. These figures underscore Norway’s unwavering commitment to electrification.
While electric vehicles soared, internal combustion engines (ICE) continued their descent. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 146 registrations, with petrol hybrids clinging to a 1.1% market share. Pure diesel models managed to hold onto 1% of new registrations, while traditional petrol vehicles dwindled to a mere 0.4% share. Notably, fuel cell vehicles failed to register a single unit.
Tesla played a pivotal role in this electric revolution, capturing an astounding 32.5% of the market with 4,210 units sold. The American automaker’s success can be attributed to increased deliveries of the German-built Model Y and the newly upgraded Model 3 Highland from China. This performance solidified Tesla’s position as the dominant force in Norway’s EV market.
Several factors contributed to this remarkable shift. The continuous improvement in EV technology, expanding charging infrastructure, and generous government incentives have all played crucial roles. Moreover, the increasing variety of electric models available to consumers has helped cater to diverse preferences and needs.
Norway’s success in EV adoption serves as a beacon for other nations striving to reduce their carbon footprint. As the world grapples with climate change, Norway’s experience offers valuable insights into effective policies and consumer behavior that can accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation.
