Tesla Robotaxi App Launches Nationwide on iOS: You Can Join Waitlist for Autonomous Rides

Tesla’s Robotaxi app is now available to all iOS users in the US. You can join the waitlist in the app.

Tesla has officially launched its Robotaxi app to all iOS users across the United States, marking a significant milestone in the company’s autonomous vehicle roadmap. App allows users to join the waitlist for Tesla’s driverless service, which has been operating in limited capacity in select markets. According to Tesla, access to the Robotaxi service will be expanding soon, with Android support coming at a later date.

Timing of this nationwide app release aligns with new regulations for autonomous vehicles that took effect in Texas on September 1. These regulatory changes appear to have influenced Tesla’s operational approach, particularly in Austin where the service has been testing.

Tesla has made notable adjustments to how it deploys safety monitors in its vehicles. Tesla now positions safety monitors in the driver’s seat specifically for trips involving highway driving, a change from the previous arrangement where monitors sat in the front passenger seat.

“Safety monitors are only in the driver’s seat for trips that involve highway driving, as a self-imposed cautious first step toward expanding to highways,” Tesla explained in a statement.

This operational shift raises questions about the company’s compliance with Texas regulations and its progress toward truly driverless operation. Tesla has been clear about distinguishing between different types of rides in its service: “If your ride is taking place without a safety driver present in the driver’s seat, it is being conducted autonomously.”

New Texas regulations create a framework for companies like Tesla to operate autonomous vehicles legally, though the specific permits Tesla has secured remain somewhat unclear. The company’s cautious approach to highway driving suggests a methodical expansion strategy rather than an immediate push for full autonomy across all driving conditions.

For potential users, the nationwide availability of the Robotaxi app represents an opportunity to participate in the early stages of what Tesla hopes will become a revolutionary transportation service. As the waitlist grows, Tesla will likely use this data to inform future expansion decisions and service improvements.

As Tesla navigates the complex regulatory and technical challenges of autonomous driving, Robotaxi app rolls out as both a technological showcase and a strategic positioning tool in the increasingly competitive Robotaxi market.
