Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD Launches in China With 821km Range, Starting at $40,500

New Model Y

Tesla’s latest offering in the Chinese market represents a significant shift in electric vehicle efficiency. The company has introduced the Model Y Long Range RWD, delivering performance metrics that challenge conventional expectations for crossover SUVs. Starting at 288,500 yuan, approximately $40,500 USD, variant promises to reshape consumer expectations in one of the world’s largest EV markets.

Model Y Long Range RWD achieves 821 kilometers under the CLTC testing cycle, translating to roughly 357 miles on the EPA standard. What makes this achievement noteworthy isn’t just the raw numbers, it’s the efficiency behind them. Tesla has managed to extract this range from a 78.4 kWh battery pack, demonstrating engineering prowess that few manufacturers can match.

When placed alongside Model 3 Long Range RWD, the differences become even more striking. Despite the Model Y’s larger dimensions, additional weight, and wider tire configuration, it trails its sedan sibling by merely 9 kilometers. Essentially a 1% variance, which borders on negligible for vehicles in different categories.

Tesla has announced that deliveries will commence within two weeks, allowing early adopters to experience this efficiency firsthand. Timing couldn’t be better, China’s EV market continues to expand rapidly, and consumers are increasingly focused on real-world range capabilities rather than simply theoretical specifications.

Previous testing of the Model Y Long Range variant has already yielded impressive highway results. Industry observers expect this rear-wheel-drive configuration to perform similarly, if not better, under various driving conditions.

However, there’s one aspect that hasn’t received an upgrade. Model Y Long Range RWD retains the standard 9-speaker audio system found in the base model. For customers spending an additional 25k RMB over the RWD variant, the premium essentially covers the larger battery pack and extended range—nothing more.

This raises an important consideration for potential buyers: does the extended range justify the price increase? For those who regularly undertake longer journeys or simply want peace of mind regarding charging frequency, the answer likely leans toward yes. But urban drivers with predictable commutes might find the standard version perfectly adequate.

Tesla continues proving that when it comes to electric range efficiency, they’ve really got the Y factor figured out.
