Cybertruck Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Rating, Only Electric Truck to Achieve Top Honor

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its 2025 rankings this week, Cybertruck earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating, sole electric truck to achieve this distinction in the current testing cycle.

The institute’s latest evaluation places the Cybertruck at the top of its large pickup safety list, followed by the Toyota Tundra, Rivian R1T, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500. Only two models, Cybertruck and Tundra received the top safety pick+ designation this year, a rating that demands exceptional performance across multiple crash scenarios and lighting assessments.

Recognition arrives months after the NHTSA awarded the truck a 5-star overall safety rating. According to NHTSA data, Cybertruck demonstrated the lowest injury probability and rollover risk among tested pickups.

IIHS modified its testing protocols significantly for 2025. The organization elevated the threshold for Top Safety Pick+ from “acceptable” to “good” in several categories, creating a tougher path to the highest rating. Additionally, the 2022 introduction of fifth-percentile crash test dummies, representing smaller occupants and children, in rear seating positions forced manufacturers to redesign restraint systems.

Wes Morrill, who leads the Cybertruck engineering team, acknowledged the increased difficulty. “IIHS increased the requirements to achieve “Top Safety Pick Plus” from acceptable to good, which is why Cybertruck earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ as one of only two truck models to achieve TSP+ this year,” Wes stated. He credited design, analysis, and crash engineering teams for their work on occupant protection systems.

Results suggest electric architecture doesn’t inherently compromise safety performance in the truck segment. However, only one electric model, Cybertruck matched conventional pickups in earning the top designation, while the Rivian R1T fell short of the Plus rating despite appearing in the top five.

Whether these ratings translate to real-world outcomes remains the ultimate test, but for now, the Cybertruck earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recognition in a segment where safety credentials truck along as selling points.
