SpaceX is issuing urgent notices to Starlink customers with inactive dishes: update your hardware by November 17 or risk it becoming permanently disabled. The company’s email alerts warn that “your Starlink will no longer function” without this critical firmware update.
Situation primarily affects users who’ve canceled or paused their satellite internet service and stored their hardware. While SpaceX routinely updates Starlink dishes, particular firmware update appears especially crucial for network security and performance.

“This update is part of ongoing improvements to enhance security, performance, and reliability across the Starlink network,” according to Starlink’s support page.
Good news: you don’t need an active subscription to perform this update. SpaceX clarifies that canceled customers can still update their hardware without incurring charges. “You do not even need an active service line to complete this update. Simply plugging in your Starlink and following the instructions will allow the update to install,” the support page explains.
Notice identifies two affected groups – those who must update by November 17 and a second group whose devices “will be unable to access the internet until the update is performed” after November 18.
Requirement creates significant problems for users who can’t physically access their dormant Starlink hardware within the timeframe. As one Reddit user noted: “This is going to be a problem for me, as my unit is in an RV 3,000 miles away and I have no ability to do the update within the timeframe.”
Technical reason appears related to firmware compatibility. Another user explained: “You can’t jump from super old firmware directly to new. If you let the terminal get behind enough it will go past a cutoff on the satellite end that will not let it connect anymore, and therefore become soft bricked.”
Situation also presents challenges for Starlink resellers. Tim Belfall, director at UK-based installer Westend WiFi, reported receiving similar notices and has encountered difficulties updating some devices, noting it sometimes takes “over 5 attempts before success.”
SpaceX hasn’t publicly addressed how it will accommodate customers unable to update their hardware by the deadline. Affected users can file support tickets, but the company hasn’t responded to requests for comment on this issue.
For those who’ve stashed away a Starlink dish, the message is clear: star-link it back up before the deadline, or risk permanent disconnection.
