Tesla Launches AI Training Center in China, Local Infrastructure Investment

Tesla has confirmed it’s operating a dedicated AI training facility in China, marking the first time the company has built region-specific artificial intelligence infrastructure outside its home market. Announcement comes as the automaker solidifies its position in what has become its largest global market.

Grace Tao, Tesla’s VP for China, revealed Thursday that the company has independently invested in and is now running an AI training center within Chinese borders. Facility supports assisted driving features and various AI application scenarios tailored specifically for Chinese users.

Tesla’s decision to establish independent training capabilities in China reflects the practical realities of operating at scale in the region. Rather than relying on data transfers to facilities in the United States, Tesla can now process and train models using local computing resources.

Grace declined to share specific details about the center’s computing power, stating only that current capacity meets existing requirements. Lack of technical disclosure suggests Tesla may be taking a cautious approach to discussing infrastructure investments in China.

Timing makes sense from a business perspective. By 2025, China has already become Tesla’s largest market worldwide, Giga Shanghai delivers record 97K vehicles in December 2025, a shift that fundamentally changes how the automaker allocates resources and builds technology.

Dedicated AI training center in China represents more than just technical infrastructure. It signals Tesla’s commitment to serving Chinese customers with features that work specifically for local driving conditions and regulatory requirements.

For a company betting heavily on autonomous capabilities, having dedicated AI training in China isn’t just strategic—it’s essential. Tesla appears ready to train AI where the data lives.
